2. Practice (What is it Direction: Watch the movie / Origins (2014), a Mike Cahill's sci-fi movie. Relate the movie to the philosophy of John Locke about personality identity, consciousness, and memory.

PHILOSOPHY OF JOHN LOCKE ABOUT PERSONALITY IDENTITY, CONSCIOUSNESS, AND MEMORY ( ORIGINS 2014)

According to John Locke, psychological continuity determines one's identity. He believed that the foundation of one's identity, or "self," was consciousness, namely recollection, rather than the substance of either the soul or the body.

There has long been a conflict between science and religion. It's a battle that not only takes the outside shape of tense arguments and demonstrations but also happens within us. In his latest dramatic science fiction film  Origins, writer/director Mike Cahill dives into issues of love, relationships, science, and the afterlife with eerily stunning effects.

Michael Pitt plays Ian Gray, a Ph.D. candidate in molecular biology who focuses especially on the eye. The human eye has been used as proof of intelligent design ever since Darwin's time because science cannot account for an object with the technical complexity of the human eye.

Ian has been conducting a study on the evolution of the eyeball via many animals in an effort to demonstrate that the eye can be explained scientifically.

In Origins, Cahill analyzes what it means to be alive and, ultimately, what the affirmation or rejection of an afterlife would entail for our species as a whole. It is only natural for us to wonder why we are here. All of this is revealed through the enthralling romance between Ian and Sofi, which strikes the perfect mix between intimacy and passion.

Cahill also pushes the plot in unexpected directions that only serve to deepen the issues and characters.  Origins is an excellent introduction into the sci-fi genre and a frightening, poignant work that delivers thought-provoking concepts with an emotional gut punch.

According to Locke, the self's conscious awareness of its existence as a thinking, reasoning, and reflecting identity is what makes up the self. The self may very well dwell in any number of substances or souls, therefore this in no way implies that it is necessarily imbedded in just one material or soul.

John Locke's Philosophy About Self

John Locke was an English philosopher who is famous for his theory of personal identity. This theory is considered as John Locke's Philosophy About Self. In his theory, personal identity or the "self" is found on a person's consciousness or memory. In an essay that he himself wrote, Locke proposed that the "self" is a "thinking intelligent being that has reasons and reflection." Furthermore, he said that the "self" considers itself to be itself with the same thinking, in different times and places." Thus, for Locke, personal identity is defined as the "sameness of a rational being."
